SOUTHERN DELAWARE CHORAL SOCIETY

REQUIREMENTS/GUIDELINES FOR SINGERS

Our Philosophy: Although the Southern Delaware Choral Society does not require auditions, it does believe that membership becomes self-selective in that singers who feel they are not progressing in meeting the performance standards of the group will choose to not continue with the organization for that particular season. By the same token, prospective/new singers are encouraged to give themselves a fair chance to improve their skills before deeming themselves inadequate. Reading music comes more easily to some than to others, but it is a skill that can be acquired. Regular attendance and a good effort will result in the rewards of a good performance.

Attendance: Singers are expected to attend regularly scheduled rehearsals and will not be permitted to sing in the concert if they have missed more than four rehearsals, not to include the dress rehearsal.

Dues: Although the Choral Society has several sources of funding (DDOA, advertising /patron support, ticket sales), the organization relies on membership dues, as well. Adults pay $40.00 a year ($20.00 a semester). Student dues are waived. In the case of unusual or temporary circumstances, adult dues may also be waived. Dues are used primarily to cover the cost of music, and singers are allowed to retain their music.

Performance Goals:

1. To know the music thoroughly, thus enabling singers to watch the conductor and to perform with confidence, particularly with respect to entrances, cut-offs and dynamics.

2. To produce accurate tonality in all sections and to achieve good tonal blend through the use of proper breathing techniques and good listening skills.

3. To execute appropriate dynamics as required by the score and the conductor.

4. To sing phrases and lines, especially melismas, distinctly and accurately.

5. To practice clear and accurate articulation of both vowel and consonant sounds as taught by the conductor.

6. To observe time signatures and tempi as indicated by the score and the conductor.

7. To learn and enjoy!

Performance Attire: Singers are required to purchase their own attire (although we may have a few extra gowns and tuxedos). Women may wear attire of their own choosing, provided that it is black, ankle-length, long-sleeved, relatively conservative, and without distracting embellishments. Ladies may also wear small, discreet earrings, if they wish. Men’s black tuxedos may be ordered by size through Wardrobe Mistress, Sandy Browning (645-7273) or locally. Tux’s must be conservative with no colored ties, vests or cummerbunds. Women and men must wear black hose and shoes.

Perfume, scented deodorants and/or hairspray are not to be used during performances, as they may trigger allergies among singers.
